The individuals who give of their time and of themselves to CAPS are the heart and soul of our organization -
without them, the work of CAPS would not be possible.
Some CAPS volunteers provide assistance to the staff at CAPS' headquarters; most become professionally trained presenters who
deliver CAPS' Prevention Through Education programs to audiences across Long Island. These volunteers are a diverse group,
made up of current and former teachers, social workers and guidance counselors along with concerned community members committed
to spending a few hours each month making a positive difference in the lives of Long Island's children.
Volunteer Requirements
To become a CAPS volunteer, you need to be available to work on Long Island and have your own transportation.
To become a volunteer presenter, you also need to have a high school diploma; enjoy working and talking with children and/or adults;
be comfortable speaking in public; be willing to learn about the issues addressed by CAPS; and, for student-targeted programs, be
available during school hours.
After an initial interview and screening, volunteer presenters receive roughly eight to 10 hours of training before being
assigned a program to deliver, and each presenter should be prepared to commit a minimum of three to six hours each month
during the school year to delivering programs.
Getting Involved
If you're interested in becoming a CAPS volunteer, then your first step is to call CAPS at 516-621-0552 or e-mail
us at volunteeratCAPS@optonline.net to let us know you'd like to get involved.
We'll schedule you for an interview as soon as possible.
