Prevention Through Education

Since 1982, CAPS and its corps of committed volunteers, each professionally and extensively trained in various areas of child abuse and neglect, have reached more than 500,000 Long Islanders with programs designed to help prevent child abuse and neglect before it starts.

Bully Prevention/Peer Harassment

Steer Clear of Bullies
A two-session multi-media workshop for 4th and 5th grade students designed to promote empathy, social-skills building and assertiveness skills.

Step Up and Speak Out
A two-session multi-media workshop for 6th and 7th grade students each designed to help students understand and respond to bullying situations, to emphasize the concepts of empathy and courage and to empower the "silent majority" to safely intervene in bullying incidents.

What's Up? Girl Talk
A one-hour bully prevention workshop geared specifically for 7th grade girls which defines and explores the dynamics of relational aggression on girls' friendships with one another.

Child Abuse Prevention

Safety Rules
Safety Rules - A three-session workshop for 2nd and 3rd grade students emphasizing that children have the right not to be hurt and discussing the concept of rules and how it pertains to personal well-being and safety.

Middle School Program - A two-session multi-media workshop for middle school students that covers physical, sexual and emotional abuse and neglect and teaches students how to protect themselves and prevent abuse.

Internet Safety

SurfSafe!
A one-session Internet safety workshop for middle school students focusing on cyber-bullying, online sexual exploitation and other Web-based threats to children.

Sexual Harassment Awareness and Prevention

A two-session multi-media workshop for middle school students that identifies sexual harassment and its causes and effects while empowering students to respond to harassing situations.

Date/Acquaintance Rape Awareness and Prevention

A two-session multi-media workshop for high school students that covers date rape prevention strategies, promotes awareness and encourages healthy decision making.

Special Interest Groups
