The Facts About CAPS

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION SERVICES (CAPS) is a non-profit organization founded in l982 for the purpose of preventing child abuse and neglect. This purpose is expressed in CAPS' mission: working together to keep every child safe from harm.

CAPS Presenters

Professionally trained volunteers, each extensively trained in various areas of child abuse and neglect, child safety and violence prevention, present CAPS workshops across Long Island. These volunteers primarily are teachers, social workers, guidance counselors, and concerned community members with a special interest in child abuse prevention. Together, they have presented highly acclaimed CAPS programs to hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders in more than 100 school districts.

CAPS Programs

CAPS presents many different programs, each tailored to meet the needs of the group it serves: Bully Prevention and Peer Harassment for 4th and 5th grade students ("Steer Clear of Bullies"), 6th and 7th grade students ("Step Up and Speak Out!") and 7th grade girls ("What's Up? Girl Talk"); Child Abuse Prevention for 2nd and 3rd grade students ("Safety Rules!"), middle school students and high school students; Internet Safety for middle school students ("SurfSafe!"); Sexual Harassment Awareness and Prevention for middle school students; Date/Acquaintance Rape Awareness and Prevention for high school students; prevention programs for at-risk audiences; workshops and seminars for parents, professionals and community groups; and mandated training/New York State certification classes for professionals.

CAPS Recognition

CAPS programs have been showcased at national and international conferences on child abuse and neglect, and the organization has been the recipient of many citations and awards, including: the NYS Eleanor Roosevelt Community Service Award for its outstanding contribution to the Long Island community; recognition as a "model volunteer primary prevention program" by NYS Department of Social Services; and the 1998 Metro Region Allstate Safety Leadership Award, Allstate's most prestigious safety honor.

CAPS Funding and Fees

CAPS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization funded through the generosity of foundation and corporate grants, legislative appropriations and private donations which allow us to present our student workshops without charge. These sources of funding, along with fee-based mandated reporter certification trainings and staff development and parent training programs for which honorariums are received, help defray the organization's annual operating costs. In addition, "Invest in Our Children: The Campaign For CAPS" is a separate fundraising effort designed to help the organization meet its expansion needs.
